Below the image are the event details: Their Own Devices A solo exhibition by Joe Hedges October 1, 2026 - November 12, 2026 Reception slash Lecture: The opening reception of Joe Hedges: Their Own Devices as well as a lecture by the artist will be held on Thursday, October1st, Noon. Location: Eastern Washington University Gallery of Art is located in the Art Building situated in the center of the fine and performing arts complex on the EWU campus in Cheney, Washington. Hours: Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9am to 6pm and closed weekends, holidays and for spring break March 22-26, 2027. Admission is free. The Eastern Washington University Gallery of Art presents Their Own Devices, a solo exhibition of new work by artist Joe Hedges, on view October 1 through November 12, 2026. A public reception and artist talk will be held at noon on October 1st.

The gallery will host multimedia installations and oil paintings Hedges calls Their Own
Devices, made on CNC-routed wood panels, each one cut to house an inexpensive,
obsolete consumer device sourced from thrift stores: alarm clocks, blood pressure monitors, stereos, tape recorders, a defibrillator. Figures drawn from real and imagined
Renaissance and Baroque sources inhabit panels that are physically interrupted by this
hardware, which protrudes from the surface and disrupts the picture plane in both two
and three dimensions. The result is both painting and object — a body of work in which
the oldest technology of representation is forced into contact with machines that have
already outlived their usefulness.
